About: Emily Alvarez, AICP, is a Community Planner in the Mitigation Planning program for FEMA Region VIII (Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming) where she assists state, tribal, and local governments with natural hazard mitigation planning and coordinates on hazard mitigation grants. Emily’s background is in sustainability planning, community engagement and geographic information systems (GIS). Prior to coming to FEMA, Emily worked as an urban planner in the private, public, and non-profit sectors. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Planning with a Minor in Sustainability from Arizona State University and received her Masters of Urban and Regional Planning with a Certificate in GIS from The University of Colorado Denver. Additionally, Emily holds certificate in Design Thinking from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business.
