In British Columbia, low-lying coastal communities are particularly vulnerable to storm surge during winter due to the combination of active Pacific storms and seasonal spring (high) tides. Large-scale oceanic and atmospheric phenomena such as El Nino can also have a strong reinforcing influence on storm surge in our part of the world.
